RES Software Awarded Patent for Workspace Extender Technology
RES Software, the leader in User Workspace Management, announced today that it has been granted Patent No. EP1331556 by the European Patent Office. The patent covers methods to enhance a remote desktop with applications that run locally. Workspace Extender is a key technology to successfully deploy virtual desktops.
RES PowerFuse Workspace Extender™ is one of the key technologies in RES PowerFuse, the leading user workspace management solution.
RES PowerFuse separates the user experience and settings from the underlying desktop infrastructure and dynamically composes a personalized, secure and consistent user workspace regardless of the underlying desktop infrastructure – traditional desktops, a notebook, a thin client or a virtual desktop. The result is higher user productivity and lower desktop TCO.
Now with the addition of RES Workspace Extender, RES PowerFuse also offers the unique capability to enhance a virtual desktop with applications that run locally.
This means that the local applications relied upon by an end user and a virtual desktop can be merged into a single end user workspace, thereby increasing end user satisfaction and increasing productivity, without compromising the manageability benefits of VDI. This is extremely useful for media intensive applications including CD/DVD applications, VoIP and video applications.
An example of this technology is the ability to write a CD-ROM on your local computer from the virtual desktop. This capability is not currently available in today’s virtual desktop technologies. The resulting advantage is increased end-user productivity and acceptance of virtual desktop technology as there is no perceptible difference between the virtualized environment and the local environment. All works as one seamless desktop providing a full PC-experience.
Bob Jansen, chief technology officer of RES Software stated: “We are the only vendor who provides this breakthrough technology which we believe will be critical to virtual desktop success and a key market differentiator. We created the technology back in 2001 and I am very proud that this patent award now officially recognizes the unique value of our solution.”
The User Workspace Management market is generating increasing attention as IT professionals and analysts recognize that desktop configuration of the future will be a mix of traditional workstations, thin clients, remote terminals, and virtual desktops, with the complexity of managing all the end user information a key challenge for IT.
Notably, analysts at Gartner consider personalization of ‘Hosted Virtual Desktop’ images a prerequisite for successful virtual desktop deployment and RES PowerFuse is currently recognized as the most complete product to deliver persistent personalization capabilities for HVD images.
RES PowerFuse Workspace Extender further strengthens RES Software’s leadership position in the user workspace management market.
